Privacy Policy: Retint (Themes for Your New Tab)
Last updated: October 5, 2026
Retint ("the extension") is a Chrome extension that themes your new tab page and, if you turn it on, tints the websites you visit to match. This policy explains what data Retint handles and where it goes.
The short version
- Your themes, settings and wallpaper photos stay on your computer. They are never uploaded.
- Retint has no account, no analytics, no ads and no tracking.
- If you buy Retint Pro, our payment processor receives your email address and payment details.
Data that stays on your computer
- Settings and themes. The theme you've applied, the themes you've saved, your Daypart schedule and your website-tint preferences are kept in Chrome's local extension storage (
chrome.storage.local). - Wallpaper photos. A photo you add is resized and kept in the extension's local database (IndexedDB) on your computer. Retint reads its colors on your computer to create matching themes. Photos are never uploaded. A shared theme code never includes your photo, which is replaced by a gradient.
- Most-visited sites. The new tab page reads Chrome's list of your most-visited sites only to show shortcut tiles. Retint doesn't store or send this list.
- Search. Searches typed into the new tab page go to your own default search engine through Chrome. Retint doesn't see, store or change them.
- Time of day. Daypart uses your computer's clock. It doesn't use your location.
Headlines (optional)
If you turn on headlines, your new tab page downloads the public news feed of the publishers you choose (for example CBC News or BBC News) directly from their websites, at most once every 30 minutes. Like visiting any website, the publisher can see your IP address. Retint sends no cookies with these requests and nothing else about you. The headlines are kept on your computer for 30 minutes so new tabs open instantly. Retint doesn't record which stories you open. Chrome asks you before Retint can load each publisher's feed.
Website tinting (optional)
If you turn on "Tint websites", Chrome asks you to allow Retint to change the look of websites. Retint then adds a style and a color filter to each page you visit to recolor it to your theme. Retint does not read the content of web pages (text, forms, passwords or other data), does not record which sites you visit, and sends nothing anywhere. The only thing it checks on a page is its background color, which it uses to match that page to your theme. Banking, payment and sign-in sites are never tinted. Site rules you add, such as "off on example.com", are stored only on your computer.
Payments
Retint Pro is sold through ExtensionPay (extensionpay.com) and Stripe (stripe.com). When you subscribe or buy a lifetime license, they receive your email address and payment details under their own privacy policies. The extension receives only whether your plan is active. The developer can see your email address and plan status in the ExtensionPay dashboard in order to provide support. The developer never sees your card details. Before you pay, ExtensionPay stores a random installation identifier. It doesn't identify you personally.
Your choices
- Uninstalling Retint deletes all of its local data, including your photos.
- You can turn website tinting off, or remove Retint's website access in
chrome://extensions, at any time. - To cancel a subscription, use "Manage subscription" on Retint's Plan page or contact us.
Children
Retint is a general-audience product and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how data is handled, we will update this page and tell you inside the extension before the change takes effect.
